Paying It Forward: Dr. Krishna Chivukula’s Record-Breaking Donation to IIT Madras

US based Industrialist Dr Krishna Chivukula has donated 228 crore rupees to IIT Madras, 54 years after passing out. This is being seen as the single largest ever donation to an educational institution in Inda.

With his whopping 228 crore rupees donation to his alma mater IIT Madras, Dr Krishna Chivukula is touted to have made the single largest donation to any college in India. He had passed out of IIT Madras in 1970 with an M Tech in Aeronautical Engineering and became extremely successful in the US where he had worked first and established a company and sold it for a big money.

A visionary, Dr. Chivukula brought the cutting-edge Metal Injection Molding (MIM) technology to India in 1997, at a time when it was still emerging in the U.S.

Founder and CEO of Indo-MIM, Chivukula attributes much of his success to the education he received at IIT Madras, which he recalls as both memorable and enjoyable. He told tellmystory.in “I had such  a great time here. IIT Madras played such a huge  role in my succes”.

His donation will fund five initiatives, including merit scholarships for poor Indian students and sports champions, international students from developing countries and research. IIT Madras Director, Prof. V. Kamakoti, highlighted the timeless value of education, saying “Education is the only immortal wealth that we can give to mankind.” The Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations Prof Mahesh Panchagnula added “Like the US, every alumnus and alumnae should give back to their alma mater”.

IIT Madras would spend the donation largely for merit schoarships for Indian and international students who can't afford fees.

Chivukula’s company leads in MIM technology globally. Recognising this IIT Madras awarded him the “Distinguished Alumnus Award” in 2015. In recognition of this unprecedented gesture, it has  named an academic block after him—the ‘Krishna Chivukula Block.’

Asked what propels Indians to succeed extremely well in the US, Dr. Chivukula wants India to switch to capitalist mode. He reflected  how socialist  policies in the past limited industrial growth. He says “India was then poor and not self sufficient. Now we have to wear a different hat. Be confident, believe in yourself and have a sense of discipline”. However, with India’s shift in approach and mindset, he is confident that the nation is on the brink of becoming a global powerhouse within the next 10-20 years.

IIT Madras has honoured Dr Krishna Chivukula by naming a block of a building after him.

Before joining IIT Madras Chivukula had pursued his undergraduate degree at IIT Bombay. Asked if he would donate a larger sum for them, he chuckled “I’d donate at least the same. You are putting me in trouble”.

Krishna Chivukula’s story is an inspiration to give back to the institution that shapes one, recognizing that the seeds of knowledge sown today will yield rich dividends.
