Trichy’s LitFest Debut: A Tapestry of Words

Trichy, known for its  temple Utsavams  to dance performances, political rallies to religious congregations and  marathons to flash mobs finally has its own LitFest, with Poets and Writers gathering in a defined way.

Held on the 8th at the Courtyard by Marriott, The Trichy Literature festival, unfolded like a tapestry of words and wisdom, with its drama and depth reverberating through the venue. From the word go- the atmosphere was charged with excitement as over 250 literary enthusiasts and creative minds gathered under the same roof. The setting was elegant and timeless and it became a sanctuary for conversations that transcended the ordinary and ventured into the realms of new ideas that could shape cultures and history.

A powerful keynote address  by Justice (Retd) Prabha Sridevan, whose words carried weight and grace set the tone for the festival. It stirred the minds and prepared the audience for the intellectual feast that lay ahead. Justice Prabha Sridevan, enthused the audience with here storytelling prowess from the “Chudamani” that urged the audience to embrace the importance of literature .

Curated with finesse by The Aura’s , Vrinda Ramanan and Mythily Ramanan, they were  ably assisted by the other committee members- Rajalakshmi, Rajeshwari, Smitha, Vidya and Subha. Their commitment to ensuring a seamless event was evident as every session flowed effortlessly keeping the audience engaged and wanting for more. Co- curated by Rugmani Prabhakar from Bangalore. The festival was a remarkable blend of local flair and broader literary insights.

Vibrantly set, the day started with the celebrated author Perumal Murugan, and his translator Janani, whose Scent of the Earth was ably facilitated by Dr. Jayanthi Manoj. This panel explored the life and works of Perumal Murugan.

The History Panel had eminent Gowri Ramnarayanan and  Arshia Sattar, who commemorated history with their own interesting perspective that threw a whole new light on the happenings that were already documented in time. Ashwin Prabhu as moderator took it to a different level.

The Translation Panel featuring  Gowri Ramnarayanan and Kanniayan Dakshinamoorthy ( the Sahithya Academy awardee) brought out nuances of translations. The intricacies of translating emotions and ideas across languages was discussed, ably moderated by Kalyanaraman Durgadas.

The Shirt Story Panel had young and budding authors like Siddarth Dasgupta, , Manu  Bhattadri  and Rochelle Potkar who examined the brevity of substances and expressions and depth of human experiences . This was handled by Rugmani Prabhakar.

The Evolution of Spiritual Poetry Panel resonated with those who sought profound connection with the divine through literature. Mrs.Vrinda, Dr.Maadhu and Dr.Kashyap Mahesh, steered this panel through music and dance. 

The Crime and Thriller Panel had eminent members  Raj Cherla,  Murli Murti,  and  Sharon Joseph-  who delved into the world of suspense and mystery where literature often mirrored real drama. This was handled and moderated by Dr. Vinod Balakrishnan from  NIT Trichy.

As a grand finale, the  Sports Panel brought forth a rare confluence of athleticism and humanness in sports. Brilliantly moderated by Lavanya Lakshminarayanan, the panelists Ayush Puthran, Karunya Keshav and R. Kaushik celebrated stories of human perseverance and triumph.

Another highlight of the day was the book launch of Aniruddh Kanisetti’s ,” Lords of the Earth and Sea: History of the Chola Empire”. Unveiling this creation, the hall resounded with the applause, cementing the fact that new voices in literature will always be celebrated.

The day though long, was far from exhausting; it was a journey of discovery and exploration. Attendees were not mere observers, they were active participants in collective dialogue. The end of the event saw many authors signing books bought by the attendees. An ode to their contribution!!! As the festival drew to a close, it was evident that this event was more than just a celebration literature- it was a testament to the enduring power of words to ignite change and elevate the society.

Mr. Girish of Agasthier Publications, Trichy excellently coordinated with various authors and got their books on display.

The Trichy Literature Festival will be remembered not just for the stories it told, but for the stories it inspired- and enduring legacy of thought, community and creativity.
