At 16, Nisha Sasikumar Becomes the Youngest Woman to Summit Mount Everest
At an age when most teenagers are still discovering their passions, 16-year-old Nisha Sasikumar has already reached the highest point on Earth.
The Chennai girl has become the youngest woman to summit Mount Everest from the South Col route in Nepal, achieving the feat just 80 days after turning 16. In doing so, she surpassed the previous record holder by 107 days.
For Nisha, the journey to the world’s tallest peak began not in the Himalayas, but with a story. Two years ago, her father, Sasikumar, trekked to the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. His experience sparked a fascination for the mountains in his daughter, setting her on a path that would eventually lead to Everest.
The climb tested her endurance, determination and resilience. Yet, when she finally stood atop the world, all the hardship seemed to disappear.
“Once you summit Mount Everest, the 45 days of hard work, the mountaineering and trekking, up to eighteen hours a day, all vanished. It was explosion of joy to see the summit, the top of the Everest. I wept,” Nisha told tellmystory.in.
But the moment was also bittersweet. “The hardest part,” she said, “was my dad having to descend.” What began as a father-daughter mission to scale the famed Seven Summits – the highest mountains on each continent- took an unexpected turn during the Everest expedition. Halfway through the climb, Sasikumar was forced to abandon his attempt following a medical emergency.
“It was supposed to be a dad-daughter summit,” he recalled. “It became impossible for me to be there, and I am glad Nisha summited Everest.”
The dream, however, is far from over. The duo is already preparing for their next challenge—Denali in the United States, the highest peak in North America.
What started as a father-daughter adventure is now becoming a family mission. Nisha’s mother, Aruna Sasikumar, is preparing to join them on a future expedition to a summit in Australia.
“I am already working out for this in the gym. I also do weight training,” she said.
For Nisha, Everest is not just about setting records. It is about believing that no dream is too ambitious.
Her message to young people is simple yet powerful: “Take a leap of faith. Don’t wait to make it one day—make it day one.”
As Nisha looks toward new peaks, her story stands as a reminder that age is no barrier to achievement. Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to take the first step – and the determination to keep climbing, no matter how high the mountain.
