As 33 year old Hema Ramaswamy performed a flawless Bharatanatyam many in the  audience were stunned and moved. Not many knew, the 33 year Indian American dancer is a person with special needs. Hema told tellmystory.in “Bharatanatyam is my breath and passion. I enjoy dancing. It gives me joy and happiness”.

With weak muscles and poor fine motor skills, over the years Hema had overcome two major brain surgeries. It took ten years of rigorous Bharatanatyam practice. Her parents Ramaswamy and Gayathri nurtured her passion in dance to improve her physical and fine motor skills. Ramaswamy says “Special needs children are unique and have unique and special abilities.  The deserve to be recognised, trained in arts and exposed to these events. They can make a very positive impact in the world”.

Born in New Jersey Hema learnt dance from Chitra Venkateswaran. As her family moved to Houston, Lavanya Prabu became her Guru. Lavanya, Artistic Director of Tatvam School of Dance, Houston, Texas says  “What I love about Hema’s performance is her spontaneity. Every time she dances differently from the previous times she has done it. She is an artist in the true sense. I am incredibly proud of her”.

Over the years Chennai’s Margazhi music season has been turning inclusive with differently abled carnatic singers taking to the stage. Hema’s repeat  performance in the city takes this to a new high.
