“A day out without husbands and kids? We must’ve won the lottery!” says one of the 17 women who went on an all women fun trip from Chennai to Pichavaram mangroves.

After two months of meticulous planning and buzzing anticipation, the day for our ladies-only picnic to Pichavaram finally arrived. Seventeen of us, all married women in our 30s and 50s, assembled at St. Thomas Mount Orthodox Church in Puzhuthivakkam at 5:15 AM. This outing, akin to a Mother’s Day out, offered us a rare chance to escape the daily grind of household chores and work commitments, providing a refreshing change. As one of us jokingly said, “A day out without husbands and kids? We must’ve won the lottery!”

In preparation for the day, we packed our bags with delicious snacks, refreshing drinks, and an assortment of items to make our day unforgettable, which included personal water bottles with hot/cold water, juice, towels/tissues, hand sanitizers, face wash, sunscreens, moisturizers, combs/mirrors, caps, and sunglasses.

We started our journey at 6:00 AM. Our first stop was near Puducherry for breakfast, where we fueled up for the day ahead. Despite the nearly four-hour journey, none of us felt tired. The van was filled with laughter and chatter as we enjoyed singing, playing Antakshari, exchanging snacks, and even a bit of stand-up comedy from our very own talented group members. It felt reminiscent of the lively camaraderie of the Manjumel Boys, but thankfully without any accidents!

From Chennai to Puducherry, we managed smoothly on our own. Beyond the union territory we had our trusty escort Vichu (Vishwanathan), a person from Cuddalore with extensive connections in both Pondy and Cuddalore. From an NGO, he was well-versed with the region, which allowed us to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey without any worries.

Upon arriving at Pichavaram, we were greeted by the breathtaking sight of the mangrove forests. The verdant expanse, interspersed with serene waterways, was nothing short of mesmerizing. It felt like stepping into another world, far removed from our daily lives and responsibilities. Blessy, who found exploring the backwaters akin to “stepping into another world,” couldn’t have described it better.

The Pichavaram mangroves, one of the largest mangrove forests in India, were an eye-opener for many of us. The intricate network of waterways and the lush green canopy above provided a stark contrast to our urban environment. We learned about the crucial role these mangroves play in protecting the coastline from erosion and providing habitat for diverse wildlife. Our guide explained the delicate balance of this ecosystem and the importance of conserving such natural treasures. It was a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of nature and the impact of our actions on the environment.

Reflecting on the day, Mariya, our organizer and overall logistics manager, said, “Organizing this trip was challenging, but seeing everyone so happy made it all worth it.” Mariya, who took on the mammoth task of planning every detail, ensured that each of us had an enjoyable experience, free from the responsibilities that usually weigh us down.

Within minutes of reaching Pichavaram, after a couple of photo shoots, we embarked on boat tours through the famed backwaters. The tranquility enveloped us as we moved through the mangroves, occasionally interrupted by the calls of birds, with our guide enriching the experience with insightful commentary. The serene environment provided a stark contrast to our everyday hustle and bustle, allowing us to truly unwind. At one point, someone quipped, “If only we could navigate our family life as smoothly as this boat ride!”

Bindhu remarked, “Being named Queen of the Day was such an honor!” while Rachael, recognized for her invaluable help, remarked, “Helping out and being recognized for it made my day extra special.” “The serenity of Pichavaram and the warmth of our group made this day perfect,” opined Tina.

Back on shore, we relaxed and moved to the Andhra Mess for lunch, savoring exotic and delicious biryani. The meal was a culinary delight, giving us the energy to continue our adventure. Jeena reflected, “The entire day felt like a dream come true,” while Pamila cherished the peaceful boat ride through the mangroves, describing it as “so peaceful.”

After refueling, we ventured to the lighthouse, where despite our varied ages, we climbed the 249 steps to marvel at Pondicherry’s scenic beauty. This physical challenge was invigorating, and reaching the top felt like a significant accomplishment for all of us. The view was breathtaking, making the effort well worth it. Priya giggled, “Winning the Best Smile award was the cherry on top of an already fantastic day.”

The day concluded with a joyous time at the beach, playing in the water and capturing memories. The beach was a perfect setting for us to let loose and enjoy each other’s company, away from our usual routines. “Spending quality time with such wonderful ladies was a blessing,” said Anitha. Some of us housewives, and others managing work and family, reveled in this rare opportunity to be carefree and just have fun. “We should do this more often,” one of us joked, “or our families might forget we exist!”

As the sun set over the sea, casting a golden glow, we gathered for photos to commemorate our day of bonding, relaxation, and joy. Rini enthused, “Every moment was filled with laughter and joy.” Venitha felt deeply connected with nature and her friends, stating, “I felt so connected with nature and my friends.” Sugetha enjoyed every aspect of the journey, especially the sing-alongs and Antakshari.

Reluctantly, we packed up, filled with reflections on the day’s adventures and plans for our next outing. Deepa felt that it was a “Sweet seventeen’s day out.” Leena, who was unwell said  “this picnic rejuvenated my spirit and filled me with joy.” Anitha Gigi added, “The laughter and love we shared were the highlights of the day.”

Our trip to Pichavaram was more than just a picnic; it was a journey of friendship, laughter, and connection with nature. Mariya, our organizer, received heartfelt thanks for orchestrating such a special day. As we parted ways, the smiles on our faces spoke volumes about the success of our meticulously planned ladies’ picnic.

This day will remain etched in our memories as a testament to the power of friendship and the beauty of exploring nature together. We returned home with our hearts full and our spirits lifted, eagerly looking forward to our next adventure as a group.

As one of us humorously quipped, “A day out with other mothers, away from husbands and family, is like a breath of fresh air—pure bliss!” Another added, “We’ve discovered the secret to happiness: a van full of friends, a destination in nature, and absolutely no kids asking ‘Are we there yet?’” These sentiments perfectly encapsulated the joy and freedom we felt throughout the day, making our outing to Pichavaram an unforgettable experience.
