Pedal Power: Chennai’s Cycling Inspiration

The son-mother team has set a world record pedaling 150 KM in 7 hours and 20 minutes.

Chennai’s 6-year-old cyclist Rian and his mother Gauri Mishra, both  popular in the city’s cycling circuit are quietly turning into an inspiration for many to pedal. The son-mother team has set a world record pedaling 150 KM in 7 hours and 20 minutes, cycling from Chennai to  Kalpakkam and back.

The six-year-old is not new for records. Last year he set a record, cycling 108 KM  in 5 hours and 17 minutes, solo.

Cdr Gauri Mishra, a retired naval officer says her little son did not show interest in watching cartoon programmes on television. Instead he loved watching cycling events on TV and that became a turning point for his naval officers parents to nurture his passion. My dream, Rian says “is to participate in the Tour De France  in Paris.”

Ms Gauri Mishra, a sky diver too retired after serving sixteen years. It was during her posting in  Chennai she developed a passion for cycling to explore the city and Rian picked it from his mom. Gauri denies the child is being pushed to set records. “We just let him do what he loves, we are not pushing him at all. For us cycling is fun and he demands to let him pedal longer distances” says Gauri.

Rian who’s completing class III works very hard for this. “I practise thrice a week. I pedal 50 KM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Sundays I do 100 KM” he says.

The team is also promoting cycle as an environment friendly personal transport. Rian added “It reduces carbon footprint. Saves the environment by cutting down global warming. So please pedal.”
