Crossroads

Not every crossroads asks us to choose a direction. Some ask us to choose the kind of heart we’ll carry forward.

There comes a time
when life no longer asks,
“What do you want?”

It asks, “What have you learned?”

The young heart runs
toward every sunrise,
believing every promise
is forever.

The older heart
walks more slowly.
Not because it has forgotten
how to dream,
but because it remembers
how dreams can break.

It has stood at altars
where vows echoed,
only to hear silence later.

It has believed words
that were never followed
by footsteps.

It has waved goodbye
to people
who swore they would stay.

And so,
when kindness arrives again,
it is welcomed…
but cautiously.

Not because the heart
has become cold.
Because experience
has taught it that warmth
can disappear overnight.

It stands at a crossroads.

One road whispers,

“Protect yourself.
You’ve survived this far.
Don’t risk it again.”

The other quietly replies,

“Not everyone
who approaches your life
has come to leave it.”

And there, between wisdom
and fear, between hope
and memory,

between yesterday’s wounds
and tomorrow’s possibilities,

stands a soul trying to do something far more difficult
than falling in love.

Trying to trust.
Perhaps courage
isn’t choosing quickly.

Perhaps courage
is allowing time
to reveal character.

To watch actions
outlive words.
To let consistency
become its own promise.

For the heart
that has been broken
does not need another beautiful speech.

It needs peace.
It needs presence.
It needs someone
who understands
that healing cannot be hurried.

So if today you find yourself
standing at a crossroads,

know this:
You are not indecisive.
You are honoring
everything that brought you here.

Walk gently.
Trust slowly.
Listen carefully.

And when the time comes,

choose not the road
that shouts the loudest
but the one that feels
like home.
