As you walk into Ballena Halli village in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district, there is no sound of crackers or sparklers lighting up the sky. Nor is there the familiar stench of explosives that accompanies Diwali celebrations elsewhere. Here, generations of villagers have given up fireworks for a rather noble cause: protecting thousands of bats that call the village home.
The winged visitors have made their home on trees around the village temple. And the villagers have made a collective decision not to burst crackers, ensuring that the noise does not frighten them away.
Aswin, a school student, told tellmystory.in, “Earlier, bats were perched on just a few trees, but now they have taken over ten trees. So we don’t do anything that would scare them. We worship them just like our deity Muniyappa.”
For children growing up here, a cracker-free Diwali is simply the norm. There are no arguments about missing out on the festivities. If anyone wants to experience the excitement of bursting crackers, there is an option, but with a clear boundary.
“If anyone wants to try it out, they can do it only two kilometres away,” says Raja.
The village, known for its marigold fields, has an unusual relationship with its winged residents. For the villagers, protecting the bats is not merely about avoiding noise pollution; it is also deeply rooted in local beliefs and traditions.
Old-timers recall that a few generations ago, the bats left the village following a disturbance. The family believed to be responsible subsequently faced hardships, according to local accounts. The bats returned only after a ritual was performed.
Whether rooted in faith or a conscious commitment to conservation, the tradition has endured across generations.
As cities light up the sky with fireworks this Diwali, Ballena Halli sends out a different message. In a celebration often associated with sound and spectacle, this village chooses silence, allowing thousands of its winged guests to live undisturbed.
A Diwali without crackers, perhaps, but one that celebrates coexistence.
