Chennai Woman Pilot Soars to Victory in International Competition

Sneha Baskaran from India has won the prestigious Morane Saulnier Rallye Trophy in New Zealand establishing her emergency engine failure handling skills.

24 year old Sneha Baskaran from Chennai has become the first international pilot to win  the prestigious Morane Saulnier Rallye Trophy in New Zealand.

It’s a challenge for women pilots, testing their skills to maneuver a safe landing under a simulated engine failure from 2500 feet high.

Pitted against several seasoned pilots, Sneha who was then holding only a private pilot licence  complied with all protocols and glided the aircraft  for a text book landing on the historic Ashburton airfield with precise calculation. She touched down exactly on the grid drawn on the runway. Sneha told tellmystory.in “We are trained  for emergencies. But this tested our emergency skills as well as our accuracy and ability to control while landing”.

Based in Chennai, Sneha took to flying after her B Tech in Genetic Engineering. She’s preparing to take a test  to join a commercial airline so she could take wings.

There is excitement at her flying school, The New Zealand Airline Academy where 34% of the trainees are women. “We offer highest standards of training that has enabled Sneha to win this trophy. We are proud of her and wish her the best” said Jonathan Manuel, CEO / Director of New Zealand Flying Academy.

Certainly women power on a high asserting yet again that even sky is not the limit.
