Chennai’s First AC Electric Local Train

Buit on the Vande Bharat platform this EMU will have the touch and feel of a metro train with automatic doors and LED screens for passengerinformation.

Chennai is all set to get its first swanky air-conditioned electric local train or EMU. Built by the Integral Coach Factory in the city, the train comes closer to a metro coach. It has automatic doors, LED display for passenger information and passengers will be able to walk from one end of the train to another as it saves space with the propulsion system tucked under the train.

The train would have twelve coaches with little over 1100 seats and has space for nearly 4000 people to stand. There is a buzz in the railway circles that this train would  be launched connecting Chennai and Chengalpattu.

With scenic windows and inter-connected coaches to walk through end to end, this AC electric train is set to transform local train travel experience in Chennai.

The ticket price is not clear at the moment. Officials say it would be slightly expensive compared to the regular fare.

his is the first such train under Southern Railways. Mr U Subba Rao, General Manager of ICF says “The touch and feel of this train would be like a metro. We have built this on the Vande Bharat platform”. ICF would deliver one more train of this kind to Southern Railways.
