It was literally a corporate day out for two rescue dogs at the sprawling office space of Purchasing Power, an IT company in Chennai. This was how the US  headquartered company decided to celebrate National Rescue Dog Day (May 20). Many among their team of 160 employees got an opportunity to pet, play and bond with the canine visitors for a couple of hours.

For Aanchal B, a Communications Associate, the experience created a positive impact changing her perception about stray dogs, cats and animals. “I understood the fact that there are so many strays out in the open  that require our help. It made us more open to the idea of welcoming dogs and cats in our homes”.

Jayashree, a Data Analyst wants to adopt a dog sometime. She fell in love with Olive, one of the canine visitors. The experience helped her understand “The loyalty and loving companionship of dogs” and how they can reduce stress and contribute to her emotional and mental well being. She added “I’d definitely adopt a dog and raise in the future. It is a responsibility and requires a lot of commitment and a  sense  of routine”.

The company partnered with PAWS in Chennai to raise awareness on stray dogs. Anupama Srinivasan the animal shelter's President also made a presentation.

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) the company had partnered with Prithvi Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a non profit organisation that runs an animal shelter at Chennai’s Kovalam. It reaches out to stray  dogs and cats. Its President Anupama Srinivasan made a presentation as well. Welcoming this Anupama said “It’s extremely rare a corporate shows interest in rescue dogs. Most of them show interest in skill development or environmental activities like beach clean up”. She added “They would soon send young volunteers to our shelter taking this to the next level”.

Organisers feel the unique initiative was a success and that it had accomplished its purpose. Shan K, HR Head said “Most of us have an aversion towards stray animals. We wanted to bridge this unknown barrier”. She added “If we get to interact with stray dogs we would behave responsibly.  We wanted to break this and bridge the unknown barrier”.
