Day 1 at the Women’s Tennis Association 250 Chennai Open

Karman Kaur Thandi, one of only 6 Indian women to break into the top 200 World women’s tennis rankings, pulled off a major upset against French Chloe Paquet. Ranked no 359 currently, with a highest ranking of no 196 in august 2018, Karman Thandi storms to the 2nd round of the WTA 250 Chennai Open. Coming back from one set down to win 4-6, 6-4′ 6-3, she overcame the 8th seed in 2hours and 35 minutes. This was only her 2nd WTA match win and a first since Nanchang 2018, making it a big day for women’s tennis in India.

“The win means a lot,” Karman said after the win. “I could feel the energy of the crowd on the court. Will power and grit to fight, that’s what I showed.” She will next face Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard who defeated Joanne Zuger (Switzerland) 7-6(7-4),6-2 minutes before Karman took the stage. This is Bouchard’s first win at a WTA level in 18 months, since her shoulder surgery a couple of month’s back.

A former world no 7, Wimbledon finalist, and multiple time grand slam semi finalist, Genie Bouchard enters this tournament unseeded yet full of hope.

Genie and Karman had turbulent matches with momentum swings throughout and although neither of their matches were perfect, they fought and pulled through the tough moments. Karman will be entering this match with a lot of confidence from her first round win, however, this will be a tough but not impossible task for India no 2.
