Scaling New Dreams. Maid’s Son Among Class X School Toppers

Kanniamma, a domestic help in Chennai is elated. Her younger son Dinesh has emerged one of the school toppers in class X board exams. He has secured second rank with 442 marks at the Tambaram Municipal Higher Secondary School. She earns just around Rs 6000 a month and her husband is a daily wager.

The family couldn’t afford private tuition. Dinesh says his teachers encouraged him and he used to study at least for four hours every day at home. He has secured 95 marks, both in Science and Social Science and aspires to become a doctor. Now he wants to crack NEET, the entrance test for medical admission to do his MBBS. Acknowledging his parents’ sacrifice Dinesh told tellmystory.in “Often my mother feels bad that she’s not able to buy a lot of the things to me and my brother”.He added “My teachers motivated me so much. At some point they were unhappy that I didn’t measure up. From then on I worked really hard”.

However Kanniamma, the mother of two is determined to provide for her two boys. She says “I wanted to study a lot but I couldn’t because of my family situation. I want them to study what I couldn’t “. She’s determined and hopes she would receive adequate help to enrol her son for NEET coaching.

“People often ask her to send her boys for a part time job so they can earn some money to fulfil their dreams, but she refused saying that as children they ought to focus on their studies” said Selvi, a relative.

A mother’s love is often said to transcend all boundaries. Kanniamma is a perfect example of this.
