Step Towards Inclusion: ‘Walk Along 2.0’ Carnival for the Differently Abled on Aug 11″
You would not want to miss Chennai’s “Walk Along 2.0” on Sunday the 11th August, if you are a differently abled person or if you care for them. The 600 metre “Experience Walk Along” at Namma Chennai Park in Adyar, on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai would introduce you to a variety of unknown or less known games, arts, skills and opportunities differently abled can experience, enjoy and pursue to empower themselves.
Eight organisations working in the area of persons with disabilities would expose the differently abled or their caretakers to exciting games including Blind Chess , Boccia for wheel chair users or even dance, drumming, keyboard, music and art lessons for the differently abled.
If you are serious about sports, you would get to know about exclusive groups who help the community enjoy sports or take them on adventure trips with dedicated escorts taking care of them. The event would connect the community with those offering these programmes.
There would also be an opportunity to see textile weaving for those keen to pursue it as a livelihood opportunity. “Our Focus is on shifting the mindset of people from Sympathy to Empathy and thereby creating opportunities to Empower the People with Disabilities“, said Namitha Dilip, Accessibility Chair, Young Indians, Chennai – a key organiser .
8 other stalls by city colleges would also offer games both for the abled and the differently abled including Hoopla and Hopscotch.
Drawing school and college students, it’s going to be a confluence of PwD powered institutions, schools, sports academies and vocational training centers besides Young Indians and CII members.
Besides helping the differently abled with entertainment, physical activity and even income generating opportunities in the long run, the carnival many say would nurture empathy among the abled and lead them towards equal opportunity and inclusivity.
