Tamil Nadu Unveils First Dark Sky Park in Kolli Hills to Boost Astro-Tourism

Tamil Nadu is set to chart a new course in astro-tourism with the launch of its first-ever Dark Sky Park in the picturesque Kolli Hills. The designated hilltop landscape, located within the Ariyur Shola Reserve Forest in Namakkal district, offers exceptional natural darkness, making it ideal for celestial observations with minimal interference from urban light pollution.

The initiative, described as a first of its kind in the state, aims to create a structured platform for star gazers, astronomy enthusiasts and students. The park will be equipped with three advanced telescopes to facilitate guided night sky observation sessions. In addition, awareness programmes and educational activities will be conducted during the day to foster scientific curiosity and environmental consciousness.

Authorities are also planning to organise whole-night star gazing sessions two to three times a month, particularly during significant astronomical events such as the new moon phase, when skies are at their darkest and most conducive for observation.

Senior bureaucrat Supriya Sahu said the project marks a milestone for the state’s eco-conscious tourism efforts. “This initiative places Tamil Nadu on the astro-tourism map while ensuring ecological safeguards,” she noted.

The Forest Department will facilitate transportation arrangements to ensure regulated access to the site, underscoring the emphasis on conservation alongside tourism. By integrating scientific engagement with environmental protection, officials say the Dark Sky Park represents a new high for Tamil Nadu – blending sustainable tourism with a renewed appreciation for the wonders of the night sky.
