Conquering Kilimanjaro at 72

Vidya Singh at the Kilimanjaro Summit. The oldest Indian woman to achieve this.

Chennai’s 72 year old Vidya Singh has become  the oldest Indian woman to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, in Africa’s Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is one of the seven summits in 7 continents mountaineers dream to scale. Kilimanjaro’s summit is trekkable and it took eight days of trek from the base camp for Vidya to make it to the summit, that’s nearly 6000 metres high.

Vidya has already summited two of the seven trekkable summits  Mentok Kangri and Yunam Summit, but Kilimanjaro is special. Vidya told tellmystory.in “Though the other two are higher,  Kilimanjaro is special because this is one of the seven summits in 7 continents. Mountaineers and trekkers would want to tick this off their bucket list.

Vidya attributes her high altitude records  to her dogged   fitness. She adds “I cycle once a week up to 60 KM, walk twice a week with a 6 kg weighted vest and swim twice a week,  80 laps touching 2 km”. Ahead of trekking expeditions she also climbs the two little hills in Chennai.

Into high end  event management, Vidya treks as part of a group. After every expedition, she also brings out cofee table books capturing stunning pictures and  stories. She  turns  them into  lifetime memories. She has now set her eyes  on Russia’s MOUNT ELBRUS and Japan’s MOUNT FUJI for her next expeditions. Vidya believes age is just a number and she  proves it every time.
