MNREGA Mom’s Daughter At Lady Shri Ram. Requires Help.

A 17 year old brilliant daughter of a woman working under the 100 day MNREGA programme in a village in Kerala has secured admission at the  renowned Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi.

Though Hima who had secured 1187 / 1200 has joined the BA Political Science course currently online, she requires two lakh rupees towards her hostel and travel costs for the first year. Her mother Ms Mini earns an average of one thousand rupees a month and the family largely depends on the government provision for below poverty line (BPL) families.

Hima had a traumatic childhood due to issues between her parents who ultimately  separated two years ago without a divorce and since then her mother looks after her and the brother.  “I used to make use of the lunch breaks to study my weak subjects” she told TellMyStory.in adding “I did self study as my mother couldn’t afford tuition”.
Hima had secured  A+ in her class X, XI and XII exams. With IAS dream she had chosen humanities in higher secondary though others mocked her. “I was clear in what I wanted to pursue” Hema says. In her class XII board exams she had scored centum in political science and  economics.

It was the career guidance offered by her school when she was in class XI that motivated her to aim high to get admission in Delhi University.   On what inspires her to work towards civil services she says “I know me. I am charitable; my passion is in charity. I am kind and generous. As a civil servant I can serve my country and my people better than a doctor or an engineer”.

Hima’s mother Ms Mini is emotional. “I am happy when I think about a good future this opportunity would bring her. I also sad she’d be far away”. She added “I hope we would get enough help to take care of her college fee and other expenses”.

“Hima will crack civil services. We were impressed at her focus” says Merwin Joshua, who’s non-profit organisation had identified Hima and supported  her over the last few years.
